Romaney Pinnock

Romaney Pinnock
Community Champions

Reason for nomination:

She is the epitome of grassroots football (to the point where she has physically seeded, watered and grown an entire 11 a side field from scratch by herself!) and is literally levelling the playing field for girls and women to get into football.

Started a club by women, for women 6 years ago because men wouldn't let her play, and now it's a 250+ strong community of players and volunteers, changing the lives of women and girls every day. Romaney lives and breathes it, is there 12 hours a day, every day, and does everything from club strategy to washing the dirty socks - a true grassroots champion.

The club is called Badgers Academy, and is based in Cape Town, South Africa - where there are so many challenges for women and girls to play, far beyond what we experience in the UK. This club is a lifeline, a family and a home for so many, connecting people across race, religion and background (in a city still segregated and unbalanced). It's tucked in the shadow of Table Mountain - one of the most beautiful football clubs on the planet!
