The Business of Sport

Story:

My sport media and marketing journey started in summer of my second year of university, after wanting to get involved in sport in some way, but not feeling like I’d be good enough to join a sport team! I was accepted as a marketing intern for Sport England, working on the This Girl Can campaign. Here I supported individuals, clubs and NGB partners to help break barriers to activity and create opportunities for women and girls to engage in sport and physical activity and inspire women to get active, their way.

After being inspired by all the women and girls that had contacted us through the campaign, I knew a career in sport was for me. I got a job at my university, in third year, that included photography and videography for all the university’s sport teams and events, including BUCs Wednesday games, social media and co-producing our Student Union’s sport show, where student athletes were interviewed, and highlights of the games were shown. I even had the confidence to join some sport teams, and get my coaching qualification for basketball, in the hopes of getting more opportunities for girls to play in my area.

In 2020/2021 I moved university for my masters. Although there wasn’t a job for sport media available like at my other university, I was accepted in 4 different voluntary roles as either a marketing, media and communications team member or social media marketing officer for wheelchair basketball, basketball, cricket and lacrosse. This was great to get more production and media experience, as well as keeping busy in the first year the pandemic hit us, and socialisation was low.

Now graduated, I am a Campaign Executive at Sport England, currently working on This Girl Can again. I’m very interested in sport media, and women’s sport in particular has continuously been a passion of mine since my internship years ago and I’d love to continue to work within sport, from a grassroots to elite level. Outside of that, I’d like to see more diversity across all sport from a media, including within the men’s games, and i'm determined to get involved in different sports from the media perspective and I’m determined to be involved. Outside my 9-5, I have continued volunteering and engaging within sport media, behind the camera, interviewing, or through social media for sport clubs and also at events for my own content pages and want to progress further within this field, especially in in front of the camera and behind the camera positions.

Reason for nomination:

I’d love to be part of the WeSeeYou Network experiences and use these opportunities to help me with progression within the industry. I am passionate about sport and have used my skills to help increase the physical activity levels of women and girls around the country. The skills I have picked up so far have allowed me to help clubs and organisations through voluntary work and will continue to do so as long as I can help.

Often, we see women who were at top levels of sport transition into media roles, and few outside of this. As someone who loved playing sport and then began to shy away from it, I think my journey within sport media shows how women and girls can not only get involved in sport and sport media without previously being at such a high level in sport, but can be in the white-male dominated space of the industry, as it continues to diversify.
